Tracking Budgets in Submittable

Context

The ability to track budgets and fund distribution is an important part of the grant management workflow. Most key competitors in the grant management space offer financial management features including the ability to track budgets. A Budget Tracking feature enables the ability to be more competitive with grant organizations and provides valuable up-selling opportunity for the team to offer to existing customers.

Design Approach

User research was conducted to understand goals for an MVP level feature. Out of this came numerous user stories, and ultimately the following feature requirements were set:

Designs

Based on the feature requirements, design was accomplish and iterated on through a series of wireframes, low-fi and hi-fi mocks. These took into consideration valuable feedback from key stakeholders in the company and a collaborative effort from the product team.

Testing

Six users were selected to use the feature before a full rollout. They provided valuable suggestions for further feature development and uncovered key bugs our team was able to fix.

Outcome

The response has been overwhelmingly positive from users. The sales team has been able to use the Budget Tracking feature to grow revenue by going after a vertical that was lacking in applicable user features from the Submittable platform.
